SPORTS PROGRAMME BUILDS LOCAL COACHING CAPACITY |

Sports play a vital role in strengthening communities, especially in smaller towns where they offer more than just physical activity. They foster teamwork, promote healthy lifestyles, and create safe spaces for youth to grow. In Loeriesfontein, this belief has taken root through a sports coaching training programme that aims to uplift local sport and empower coaches across various clubs.
Funded by Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farms, this initiative is designed to develop local sports capacity and equip coaches with essential knowledge and skills.
“By supporting local sports, we’re investing in our youth, promoting discipline and healthy habits, and building a more cohesive community. This initiative is about more than coaching, it’s about creating opportunities,” said Vanessa Fredericks, Economic Development Manager for Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farms.
The training, included comprehensive modules covering coach development, stakeholder engagement, sport club development, first aid, infrastructure development, guidance on forming a local Football Association (LFA) branch, and applying for Lotto Funding. Participants also received training in conducting structured and effective coaching sessions.
“Participating in the coaching course was a very meaningful experience. It gave me valuable insights and had a positive impact on both my personal and professional growth,” said Edwina Cloete, one of the programme participants.
Local primary and high schools, as well as the existing Local Football Association structures, also participated to encourage the creation of a formal local league, which will provide a platform for regular competition, talent development, and community involvement.
Seven coaches from across Loeriesfontein’s local sports clubs participated in the programme, including two each from Ramblers Rugby Club, White Bears Rugby Club, and Ramblers Netball Club, as well as one from Loeriesfontein Milan FC. As part of the initiative, Tshiamelo Inclusive Education Centre also sponsored basic sports equipment.
Certificates were awarded to coaches who completed the training, and ongoing mentorship and monitoring will continue to ensure lasting impact.
