FARMERS EQUIPPED WITH TOOLS FOR SUSTAINABLE SUCCESS

October 2025.

Feuke Mostert is one of four emerging female farmers from Loeriesfontein who were part of a larger group of community subsistence farmers that recently took part in a week-long Dorper Sheep Training course in Williston. The training, made possible through a collaboration between the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, and Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farms, was aimed at strengthening farming practices and building long-term resilience for small-scale farmers in the area.

Through the training, participants were equipped with essential knowledge on Dorper sheep breed standards, effective breeding methods, animal health care, and current market trends. They also took part in hands-on sessions that introduced modern techniques to improve the quality of their livestock and reduce the risk of disease.

“The training taught me how to evaluate a Dorper sheep by looking at its key characteristics, from conformation and head structure to midsection and pigmentation, all in line with the breed standard. I now feel confident in making informed decisions when buying a ram or ewe at an auction,” she said.

Beyond the practical knowledge, the programme has ignited Feuke’s ambition to grow her farming journey.

“Being selected for this programme was such a privilege. My dream is to one day become the first female farmer in my community to proudly farm with Dorpers.”

The training forms part of a broader strategy to empower local farmers with the knowledge and tools needed to boost productivity, improve livestock quality, and increase profitability. The wind farms covered the full cost of training, meals, and accommodation, the department provided transport for the attendees.

“This support represents an investment in rural economic growth and long-term community upliftment. By funding accessible, income-generating agricultural training, we’re helping build a more resilient local economy where agriculture is vital,” said Vanessa Fredericks, Economic Development Manager for Loeriesfontein and Khobab Wind Farms.

The programme also provides a critical opportunity for the project company to collaborate with government sector departments to further community development.
